Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat was born in Nîmes in 1936. He studied at The Montpellier School of Art from 1955-1959, then in Paris from 1962-63 in Raymond Legueult’s studio. In 1966, he began creating works using a repetitive print technique known as "all-over”, which positioned his œuvre firmly in the lyrical and geometric abstraction movement. He was a founding member of the “Supports-Surfaces” group in 1969 alongside Pagès, Dolla, Pincemin and Cane. He has had major exhibitions as an artist both in France (The Georges Pompidou Center in 1982 and The Fabre Museum in Montpellier in 2014) and abroad (Venice Bienniale in 1988). Now retired from teaching, he continues to paint every day in his atelier in Nîmes.
